Por supuesto, en esa lucha por experimentar con lo que ofrecían los tiempos, hubo que pagar un doloroso peaje que en su forma más auténtica acabó con aquel sueño de libertad, con la esperanza de haber hecho un mundo mejor. There are many who are far better qualified than I telling us that this is too soon, and that removing most of the restrictions when a new variant is spiralling out of control may not be the most intelligent thing to do. But when was intelligence ever associated with this government? A number of other countries have expressed their concern that we will be exporting it to them by opening up, and I can see why. We have just had a week when daily new infection rates have averaged over 43k, including two days when the rate was more than 50k. Looking back through previous posts, I came across one from my now just-about-defunct #SaturdaySongs series. For those not familiar with these (ie. just about all of you) these were posts about a song that had some significance for me. This one was originally published in November 2018, and it was based on – and included a reprise of – a post originally made in 2013. Neither of these scored highly in terms of interest: the 2018 one had six likes and four comments, the 2013 one just three likes and zero comments. But it still means something to me and in these days of greater interaction I felt it deserved to be shared again for the wider audience I have nowadays.

Those of you outside these shores may not be aware that our government is going to remove virtually all of the remaining pandemic restrictions next Monday in England – the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland make their own decisions on this. Whilst I would normally welcome the removal of government restrictions on what we do, I am apprehensive about this one. It comes at a time when daily infection rates are increasing rapidly, and are at their highest level since February, so in my view it is questionable if now is the right time to do this. Given that their own predictions are that those daily rates could rise from yesterday’s level of 34k to more than 100k over the summer, and given that our esteemed Prime Minister has been quoted as saying that he would be happy to ‘let the bodies pile up’ if that were…

Earlier this week, my good blogging friend Jim sent me a link to a blog by Marla, who I’d not come across before. He did so because she had posted an article which included a song that means a lot to me, and he remembered that I had posted it myself. Indeed I had, in Tuesday Tunes 52. LAS MOVILIZACIONES JUVENILES DE LOS SESENTA

Pero pasaron más cosas en aquellos años, y no precisamente baladíes. Fueron pequeños acontecimientos que hicieron reaccionar a la gente, a una juventud desilusionada y descontenta, contra el mundo que otros, cada vez más temerarios e inconscientes, se ofuscaban en prepararles.

Durante ese tiempo un joven casi barbilampiño, venido del corazón minero de América, un joven de Minessotta que se hacía llamar Bob Dylan, en franco reconocimiento al poeta Dylan Thomas, acababa de llegar a Nueva York, pateando autopistas, chupando cielo raso y azulejando el desolado peregrinar del solitario, y el alma, de acordes de guitarra y resoplidos de armónica.

Desde Mobile, en medio del desierto-On the road-, haciendo auto-stop, se las apaña para desembarcar en el Greenwich Village neoyorquino. Llega con unos pantalones vaqueros, a la fuerza desgastados, sin una cama segura sobre la que pasar la…

…pero, en todo caso, lo que demuestra es que hay trescientos sesenta y cuatro días para recibir regalos de incumpleaños…

-Desde luego -asintió Alicia.

-¡Y sólo uno para regalos de cumpleaños! Ya ves. ¡Te has cubierto de gloria!

-No sé qué quiere decir con eso de la “gloria” -observó Alicia.

Humpty Dumpty sonrió despectivamente.

-Pero “gloria” no significa “un argumento que deja bien aplastado” -objetó Alicia.

Cuando yo uso una palabra -insistió Humpty Dumpty con un tono de voz más bien desdeñoso- quiere decir lo que yo quiero que diga…, ni más ni menos.

-La cuestión -insistió Alicia- es si se puede hacer que las palabras signifiquen tantas cosas diferentes.
