A la fin des années 30, elle interprète, un soir, au Café Society – un night-club mixte de Greenwich Village – Strange Fruit, une chanson dénonçant le lynchage des Noirs dans les Etats du Sud. Il s’agit d’un poème écrit et publié en 1937 par Abel Meeropol dit Lewis Allan
